Koji Watanabe

Koji Watanabe was born in Shizuoka Prefecture (Japan) in 1934. He graduates from Tokyo University, Faculty of Liberal Arts in 1956, then joins the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1957-58, he is a visiting fellow at the Woodrow Wilson School (Princeton University). In 1973, he is a fellow at the Center for International Affairs (Harvard University). Mr. Watanabe has had a distinguished career in the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was Ambassador to Russia from 1994 to 1996 and Ambassador to Italy from 1992 to 1993. Prior to his service in Rome and Moscow, he was deputy minister for Foreign Affairs, Sherpa for the G-7 Houston and London summits of 1991 and 1990, and Japanese co-chairman of US-Japan Structural Impediments Initiative Talks. He is now executie advisor to the Japanese Federation of Economic Organisations (Keidanren) and Senior Fellow at the Japan Center for International Exchange.
